+ About Christchurch Modern
We're not architects, we're not historians and we don't know much about anything. However we do like modern houses and Christchurch is a great place for them.
If you know of a house that deserves a mention please let us know. If we've made a mistake, do the same. If you like the site, tell your friends. If you hate the site, tell your friends you like it anyway. It's a minor white lie that anyone would forgive.

166 Richardson Terrace. L Fisher House. R H Fisher.

Dec 31, 2008

Designed in 1966 by Wellington architect Fisher for his spinster sister, this modest home is a nice, modernist take on the brick bungalows of Opawa. It’s river frontage and North facing garden make a light, peaceful home.

11 Swiftland Pl. Architect Unknown.

A very smart looking house with a nice entrance and some terrific steep-pitched roof forms. It’s an unassuming house that stands out in a suburban culdesac of large, bland, unmemorable dwellings.

14a Maidstone Rd. Moore Flats. Warren & Mahoney.

71 Parklands Dr. David Allen.

Dec 21, 2008

David Allen was a contemporary of Roger Walker and Ian Athfield at the Auckland Architecture School. This idiosyncratic design borrows from, yet rallies against the formal Christchurch style established in the 60s. It looks good.

Queens Rd. Rutherford House. Warren & Mahoney.

Dec 01, 2008

This week we travel to Ashburton to uncover a mint, original pixie house in an unusual colour scheme. It seems when there’s a good price on Peach paint you don’t stand around dilly-dallying, you get the brushes out.

52 Moncks Spur Rd. James Hanna.

Dec 01, 2008

Great looking, original 1970s house that seems to do it all pretty well. The eye-catching sawtooth roof creates lots of open space and light and the centrepiece stone fireplace oozes mid-century cool.

6 Te Awakura Terrace. Architect Unknown.

Dec 01, 2008

Curvy, baby blue and tucked away under St Andrews Hill, this house must have been pretty wild in its day. The design straddles art deco and international modernism and the colour makes it look a bit like the zoo’s penguin enclosure.
