The lovely angled roofline must have been a relief from the symmetry of 1960s suburban Christchurch and a good example of Peter’s early Scandinavian forms. The house has been added to and modified to suit the current tenants, the University of Canterbury Child Care.

It’s still a much-loved and well-used building — so fit for its current purpose in fact that I thought it had originally been designed as an early childhood centre. The windows are low which is nice for the children, and a number of little outside spaces and courtyards are delineated by the arrangement of the architectural masses, allowing for different kinds of playspaces.
