+ About Christchurch Modern
We're not architects, we're not historians and we don't know much about anything. However we do like modern houses and Christchurch is a great place for them.
If you know of a house that deserves a mention please let us know. If we've made a mistake, do the same. If you like the site, tell your friends. If you hate the site, tell your friends you like it anyway. It's a minor white lie that anyone would forgive.

78 Memorial Ave. David Allen.

Jan 03, 2009

Two townhouses designed by the renowned Wellington architect who helped push New Zealand architecture in a new direction during the 1970s. Walker’s style was idiosyncratic and original and recognisable for his use of round windows, “it’s more natural for the human eye to look at a circle”, he says. Designed by David Allen, a contemporary of Walker.

11 Swiftland Pl. Architect Unknown.

Dec 22, 2008

A very smart looking house with a nice entrance and some terrific steep-pitched roof forms. It’s an unassuming house that stands out in a suburban culdesac of large, bland, unmemorable dwellings.

92c Glandovy Rd. Beaven Hunt.

Oct 27, 2008

Peter doesn’t like to visit Fendalton, but made an exception in the 1960s to build this grand home on Glandovy Rd. It’s interesting to note Peter’s slightly more individual take – hexagonal chimney and asymmetrical roof lines – on the ‘big, white Fendalton house’ done so well by Warren and Mahoney.

5a Snowdon Rd. Forbes House. Warren & Mahoney.

Oct 23, 2008

Designed in 1976 for a wealthy builder, the Forbes House is arguably the grandest of Warren & Mahoney’s residential buildings of the time. The house is formidable: raw, exposed concrete beams dominate, yet it’s elegant and totally cool.

10 Coldstream Ct. Coldstream Lodge. Heathcote Helmore.

Oct 18, 2008

A little elderly and big for our tastes, but interesting nonetheless: hotelier Earl Hagman’s Coldstream Lodge was built in 1935, but remodeled in the international modernist style by Heathcote Helmore for the Ballantyne family in the 1940s.

210 Clyde Rd. R H Ballantyne House. Warren & Mahoney.

Oct 05, 2008

Heavily…er…influenced by Finn Juhl’s 1942 House, this beautiful home was clearly dear to Miles Warren who painted some beautiful perspective watercolours of the design. The fact the owners have lived in this home for 37 years says a lot.

22 Chepstow Ave. K Uren House. Warren & Mahoney.

Sep 25, 2008

A very early example and supposedly the eighth Warren & Mahoney house built. Known as the K. Uren House, small but perfectly formed with lots of architecture in a small package, just the way we like it.

14 Gleneagles Tce. Pascoe and Linton.

Sep 21, 2008

This beautifully preserved house was created by the partnership of Paul Pascoe and Walter Linton. For more information call 0800 DC3 FLY. Incidentally, one of the neighbours is a very well concealed George Lucking designed house at number 10.

368 Waimairi Rd. Architect Unkown.

Sep 04, 2008

On a gloomy Christchurch day, this fellow looked bright and chirpy. Who knows what lurks behind all that crazy, ultramarine paint?

32 Creyke Rd. Sherris House. G D Griffiths.

Aug 26, 2008

Not much known about this little ripper designed in 1960. G D Griffiths pops up a couple of times in archive references, but we don’t even know his first name. Let’s just say it’s Gary his name is George (thanks Peter Beaven).

11 Braco Pl. Henning Hansen House.

Aug 24, 2008

Holger Henning-Hansen’s own home designed in 1958. Not much to see from the street except some blue outdoor furniture on loan from the Greek Islands.

8 Pentlow Pl. M E Mahoney House. Warren & Mahoney.

Aug 14, 2008

This is Maurice Mahoney’s house, designed in 1966, which he still occupies. The house sits in a Fendalton cul de sac and looks fantastic (despite the Toyota Echo in the drive, which we tried to push away, but the handbrake was on and the doors locked). The Mahoney house utlilises many of the Warren & Mahoney hallmarks: white painted concrete blocks, exposed structure and steeply-pitched gabled roofs
