Oh dear. This abandoned, sad-looking orphan was once a striking, modern home with a mix of vertical and horizontal timber weatherboards and a great big Oamaru stone fireplace at its heart. C’mon, look into those big, pleading eyes (or windows) and say it’s not worth saving!?

This townhouse is particularly good; designed around ’66 and renovated nicely in the noughties by Warren & Mahoney’s Richard McGowan (please contact Richard directly with any questions regarding the chequer plate stair treads). The building feels like the perfect prototype (and archetype) of the modern Christchurch inner-city home: beautiful and efficient in materials and design. At the open home make sure to say loudly, “mmm, very Miles”.

Underneath the pergola, rooftop solar panels and various TV aerials might just be a very nicely designed home sitting up on top of Mount Pleasant. It would be good to see it without the ‘flair’ and was originally designed by Ron George for himself.

Great weather over the weekend, perfect for peeking over fences and spotting this T-shape beauty up on the Cashmere Hills. The solid garage door doesn’t feel right, but it’s a remarkably intact, well cared for original home.

Dean sent in these pics of his new flat. A late 60s design in classic early W&M style: concrete block with rimu and meranti timber detailing. Dean has done a nice job inside and needs to club the body corporate like baby seals until they return the exterior to crisp white.

The copy of Sir Miles’ book on the coffee table is noted.

We love Pixie houses (almost as much as Justin) and it’s been a while since we featured one. The home was mentioned in Home & Building in 1963 saying, “how sensitively it is possible to unite home and garden”. Bafflingly, the garden has been replaced with a pool, which due to the Christchurch climate acts for the most part of the year as a hole full of water.

Designed to give maximum sun to as many rooms as possible, this concrete block and weatherboard design featured in the Christchurch Art Gallery Group Show, November 1963. Originally the blocks were painted white, but on the whole the home is well-preserved and still looks smart.

Keith Mackenzie’s own home built in 1961, showing the delicate skills of this much underrated firm. Hall & Mackenzie were former partners of Paul Pascoe and lead designers of the University of Canterbury’s formidable Registry building.

Very precise set of four townhouses in unpainted concrete block and 45 degree pitched roofs. Amazingly, they seem relatively unmolested and have a striking street presence.

There’s a lot to like about this 1970s submission in Fendalton with its crisp graphic lines and startled panda-eye windows.
