A tip-off and little bit of self-promotion from Rebecca who is selling her 1964 home and would love for it to go to a fellow enthusiast. The weatherboard exterior, large windows and low-pitched roof is more reminiscent of Auckland’s Group Architects, but the exposed internal concrete blockwork is pure Christchurch.

This home is typically unorthodox and in keeping with Peter’s design at the time, similar in style and materials to his characterful Tonbridge Mews. The home is split over three levels accessed by a spiral wooden staircase that forms the spine of the building. Extensive timber detailing, arched doorways and eccentric touches like the large red hemispherical plastic window in the living area are all pure Beaven.

Unpainted concrete block is back in fashion, but it’s rare to see an original 70s home that’s avoided a Tuscan-themed makeover with aluminium joinery conservatory and alfresco deck & hot tub addition.

Bravo.

Designed in 1951, this small 80 sq/m 2-bedroom house was commissioned by two elderly spinster sisters from Sumner. A surprising design solution for two women born in the late 19th century. For reasons unknown the sisters sold the house 4 years later and moved back to Sumner.

The home has been beautifully restored and enhanced by Chaplin Crooks.

The architectural detailing of the new addition draws from that of the original home, dominated by wide dark-chocolate coloured bevel-back weatherboards, broad horizontal flat roofs, white painted detailing and a cantilevering open pergola structure drawing visitors toward the entry. The steel pipe fence echoes a similar screening detail at the front steps.

Great looking, original 1970s house that seems to do it all pretty well. The eye-catching sawtooth roof creates lots of open space and light and the centrepiece stone fireplace oozes mid-century cool.

Sitting right on the end of a volcanic spur and overlooking the estuary of the Avon and Heathcote, this wee ripper was built in 1957 and designed by Walter Linton. Perched precariously above Main Road, it’s one of Christchurch’s most well-known houses

Don Cowey was one of the architects who collectively developed the Christchurch Style in the 1960s. This lovely little house is where he lives today used to live and rests on a concrete block base, a nice reference to the old times.
