+ About Christchurch Modern
We're not architects, we're not historians and we don't know much about anything. However we do like modern houses and Christchurch is a great place for them.
If you know of a house that deserves a mention please let us know. If we've made a mistake, do the same. If you like the site, tell your friends. If you hate the site, tell your friends you like it anyway. It's a minor white lie that anyone would forgive.

19 Jacksons Rd. R W Smart House. Warren & Mahoney.

Mar 16, 2009

There’s a lot to like about this submission in Fendalton with its crisp graphic lines and startled panda-eye windows.

Nice pyramid roof forms, a departure from the earlier Pixies. We’ll take it, sans Subaru.

14a Maidstone Rd. Moore Flats. Warren & Mahoney.

Dec 22, 2008

Designed in 1967 as two large flats, each with two bedrooms and a private courtyard. If there’s one thing Warren and Mahoney did well, it’s chimneys: proud, overscale and assertive. The larger flat is still lived in by the original owner and both are in good, unmolested condition.

Queens Rd. Rutherford House. Warren & Mahoney.

Dec 01, 2008

This week we travel to Ashburton to uncover a mint, original pixie house in an unusual colour scheme. It seems when there’s a good price on Peach paint you don’t stand around dilly-dallying, you get the brushes out.

1 Heaton Rhodes Pl. Cox House. Warren & Mahoney.

Nov 18, 2008

As a rule, only houses on Santorini and those owned by salty old sea dogs should be painted blue and white. But the paint disguise can’t can hide the strong Christchurch style of this home that pops out of the trees off Dyers Pass Rd. The sharp roof is particularly worthy.

63 Papanui Rd. J J Connor flats. Warren & Mahoney.

Nov 11, 2008

Built in 1961, this small block of four flats is looking sad and defeated, but behind the trees and faded paint are the remnants of great architecture. Nice big deep concrete beams and a great chimney. Dear owner, please sort it out.

19 Poynder Ave. A R Blank House. Warren & Mahoney.

Nov 05, 2008

An unusual Warren & Mahoney design in red brick for the enigmatically named Mr Blank. This early 60s home is one of the rare Miles Warren ‘woolsheds’ before he latched on to the more distinctive ‘stable’ form. Curiously the rear of the house is elevated for no apparent reason.

25 Macmillan Ave. S J Wilson House. Warren & Mahoney.

Nov 05, 2008

Completely contradicting the previous post: a Pixie House on the hills. The home steps up the slope and presents a fairly nondescript face to the street. An original sculpture by the entrance is a nice period touch and a rare concession to fashion from the classicists at Warren & Mahoney.

131 Mt Pleasant Rd. Stebbing House. Warren & Mahoney.

Nov 03, 2008

Typically, Warren and Mahoney treated their hill houses quite differently than those down on the plains. The uniformity of the Pixie House design is discarded for more experimental and individual shapes. This early 60s house has additions that extend the original building down the slope.

5a Snowdon Rd. Forbes House. Warren & Mahoney.

Oct 23, 2008

Designed in 1976 for a wealthy builder, the Forbes House is arguably the grandest of Warren & Mahoney’s residential buildings of the time. The house is formidable: raw, exposed concrete beams dominate, yet it’s elegant and totally cool.

45 Richfield Rd. JH Howden House. Warren & Mahoney.

Oct 21, 2008

Mr Howden knew Miles’ dad at Pyne Gould Guinness and asked Warren Senior whether he knew any aspiring young architects. He did, and the house was built in 1957. Set in a beautiful garden overlooking the bay at Port Levy, the house is lived in by the original owner’s son and his wife.

29 Wadeley Rd. Wade House. Warren & Wahoney.

Oct 17, 2008

The Wades were farmers who once owned most of the land which is now Ilam.  When they sold the farm they kept some of the land and Warren & Mahoney did a few projects for them including this house and the Birchdale flats in Newbridge Place – a cul-de-sac full of Modern architecture and well worth visiting.

42 Idris Rd. Not Warren & Mahoney.

Oct 13, 2008

Very nice example of a ‘Pixie House’, but not by Warren & Mahoney. A copy of the W&M signature style by architect David Allan and just down the road from the W&M Papprill House it steals its plan from: Three separate roof forms: two parallel wings linked by a central block containing the entrance. W&M spawned many imitators, but this one is the best of the fakes. The lattice gates must go.
